KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Graphic Packaging International has submitted a request to the state of Michigan for a permit which may further improve air quality near its north side paper recycling plant in Kalamazoo.
The request is to end production on their older K3 machine and permanently shut down boilers 8 and 9. Production would be moved to their K2 facility.
They say modernization would result in a significant reduction in the overall potential to emit several chemicals from the facility.
They say the paperwork submitted to EGLE has just begun the review process and their air-quality engineer may need some time to complete the evaluation.
Complaints about the plant have been made for decades, but just in recent years pressure has been brought to bear to eliminate the odors, as the company has sought permits to expand and upgrade their facilities.
