BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office is displaying what they are calling a “powerful piece of artwork” in the Victims’ Unit.
The artwork was created by sexual assault survivors and underscores the collaborative efforts between the Calhoun County Victims’ Unit and Bronson Sexual Assault Services, or SAS.
The partnership provides advocacy and support for youth and caregivers throughout child abuse cases, and offers visible solidarity and serves as a tribute to the strength of survivors within the community.
The first piece is titled “Survivor Ribbons” and features an array of colorful ribbons with words and images expressing what survivorship means to each artist.
The second is “Handprints.” That is a “vibrant collection of multi-colored handprints encircling a teal ribbon,” which is the national symbol of sexual assault awareness and prevention.
Every April, in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month, SAS hosts a benefit dinner for programs that support survivors and their families.
Calhoun County Prosecutor David Gilbert says displaying the artwork “serves as a powerful reminder of the positive impact local resources have on victims of abuse.” He adds the hope is they will encourage conversations and empower victims to report their experiences and seek help.
