PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The City of Portage says property owners and renters who experienced damage from the May 7, 2024, tornadoes are eligible to apply for financial relief through a non-profit organization specializes in providing disaster relief in Michigan.
After the Storm is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization launched by the Michigan Conference of The United Methodist Church in 2022 in response to a flood in Detroit and Southeast Michigan. That same year, they also responded to a tornado in Gaylord, working with more than 100 families to rebuild and recover.
Their Residential Application for Tornado Relief is now available at www.afterthestormmi.org. The application will help determine eligibility for assistance based on documented storm impacts.
To complete the application, individuals must provide supporting documentation such as invoices, canceled checks, or repair estimates; insurance settlement letters or copies of reimbursement checks; documentation of any additional funding sources; and a summary of the net financial impact from the tornado.
After the application is submitted, a Disaster Case Manager will contact the applicant by phone within five business days using the number provided on the form. Relief awards will be determined based on the availability of funds, the number of applications received, the severity of the damage, and other relevant factors.
“This program is a critical step in helping residents continue to recover from the devastating tornado,” said Adam Herringa, Chief Operating Officer for the City of Portage. “We are grateful to After the Storm for leading this effort and encourage all eligible property owners to apply as soon as possible.”
For questions or assistance with completing the application, please call After the Storm at (517) 243-5522.
