KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County board has formally accepted the recommendation to put the community’s new youth sports complex at the Westgate location.
Several commissioners and board chair Jen Strebs congratulated and thanked Discover Kalamazoo for all the work they have done on the project.
“It’s an exciting opportunity, and I love to see family focused and youth focused growth in the community, and I think it will all benefit us all for a long time forward,” said Strebs.
That particular site, next to U.S. 131 just north of West Main Street, has sparked a debate on who should sit on the facility authority.
The original plan was to put representatives from the county, which is handling finances, and the city, which will be providing roads and utility work, with sports, tourism, hotel and business officials on the authority board.
But county commissioner John Deleeu says its actually closer to Oshtemo, which he represents.
“Their public works director would really appreciate being part of the infrastructure planning and there’s a board member who would like to sit on the Advisory Board for this committee,” he says.
Several other commissioners expressed similar concerns.
The county board also held a closed session on the purchase of the property. That and who sits on the authority will both be on future agendas.
It could be one of the hottest local boards to serve on in Kalamazoo
