KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – This is a special Juneteenth this year, a day to remember Black history at a time when it appears that some in the federal government are trying to suppress it.
So here is a history lesson.
Juneteenth is not the day that President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, or the date that Congress approved the 13th Amendment, making slavery unconstitutional.
It’s the day 2-1/2 years after Lincoln proclaimed freedom for southern slaves that the news finally got to Texas, when Union troops landed at Galveston Bay.
Kalamazoo County Administrator Kevin Catlin says that’s what the celebration is about.
To mark the occasion, governmental offices for the state of Michigan, Kalamazoo County, city and township of Kalamazoo, and the courts will be closed today. Post offices will also be closed and there will be no mail delivered today.
