PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A suspect believed to be responsible for a series of armed robberies at Aldi stores across Michigan is now in custody and facing multiple felony charges.
34-year-old Kaleb Michael Shaffer was apprehended in Rapid City, South Dakota June 4 and extradited to Michigan. He was arraigned last Friday in Kalamazoo County District Court and is currently being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail with bond denied.
Portage Public Safety says December 10, 2024 and again January 18, 2025, a masked individual entered the Aldi store located at 6291 South Westnedge Avenue in Portage. In both incidents, the suspect asked to speak with the on-duty manager before implying he was armed and demanded money in a back room of the store.
As Portage detectives investigated these robberies, they discovered similar incidents had occurred at other Aldi locations throughout Michigan during the same timeframe. The suspect’s methods and description remained consistent across all cases.
Following the January 18 robbery, investigators developed a lead identifying a potential suspect residing in the Lansing area. Working in coordination with law enforcement agencies from three additional jurisdictions and Aldi Corporate, Portage detectives compiled evidence linking the suspect to multiple Aldi robberies statewide.
Meantime Tuesday the Meridian Township Police Department in the Lansing area announced that a charge of Armed Robbery has also been authorized against Shaffer in connection to a robbery that occurred at their local Aldi January 5, 2025.
