KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Two people are in custody after they were arrested June 21 by the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team, Kalamazoo Public Safety, and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
They were working on an operation to address gun violence in the city of Kalamazoo by locating and arresting people who were illegally possessing guns.
KVET found Somarion Bennett, who had several outstanding warrants for weapons offenses, along with a 17-year-old in the 1300 block of Portage Street.
Both tried to run away, and the 17-year-old discarded a firearm before being arrested.
A search of their vehicle also turned up a firearm that police say had been discarded by Bennett and was reported stolen in Benton Harbor last year.
Bennett had been free on a personal recognizance bond after he was arrested for illegal gun possession last month.
He is now charged with carrying a concealed weapon, resisting/obstructing police, possession of a gun while banned from that, and more.
The 17-year-old is charged with carrying a concealed weapon and resisting/obstructing police, and is in the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home.
