KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners had to pause Monday night as they considered one of the biggest expenditures in city history.
Before them was a $101-million bond sale to finance a variety of improvements to their water utility systems.
Commissioners Chris Praedel and Quiana Decker says it’s not only required, but the smart thing to do.
Finance director Steve Vicenzi says the city will be borrowing the money at a very favorable rate.
Mayor Dave Anderson says he looks at it as an investment.
They have been planning the upgrades for years and talking about them for months.
The money will be spent replacing water and other mains, consolidating pumping stations, replacing lead pipes to homes, meeting stiffer water quality standards, funding upgrades throughout the system which services the metro area and surrounding townships.
