VALLEY TWP., MI (WKZO-AM/FM) – A 29-year-old man lost his life in an apparent drowning near the Allegan Dam on Friday night, Jul. 11.
First responders were dispatched to the Kalamazoo River shortly after 8 PM on a report that two persons had fallen into the waters, with one able to grab onto a tree branch and was waiting for help.
Members of the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and the Allegan Fire Department put their boats into the water, and a short time later, the unnamed victim was found not far from where he had fallen.
It was learned that several people had been standing waist-deep in the river fishing when a strong current pushed them downstream to a drop off, where the two persons went under.
No other details were disclosed as the incident remains under investigation.
