TRAVERSE CITY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The suspect in the stabbing of eleven people at a Walmart near Traverse City on Saturday has a lengthy criminal and mental health history.
Bradford Gille was charged nearly a decade ago with digging up and mutilating dead bodies from a Petoskey cemetery, claiming people were buried alive.
Gille was sentenced to a year at the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital in 2018 after being found not guilty by reason of insanity when he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and psychoactive substance abuse.
He has also been treated for mental illnesses since 1998.
Gille is facing terrorism and attempted murder charges for the Walmart stabbings and was arraigned Monday. He interrupted the magistrate several times.
Bond for Gille was set at $100,000 cash.
The magistrate called the accusations the most heinous to come before the court in more than 30 years.
Gille is scheduled to appear in court for another hearing next week. No motive for the attack has been released. One victim remains in serious condition. Seven others are in fair or good condition.
