KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County was scheduled to release their proposed 2026 budget this week.
When the board meets tomorrow, members will set the date for the annual public hearing on the budget and consider a resolution opposing the current proposed state budget as approved by the House.
That Republican-approved spending plan includes a $34-million cut to county revenue sharing, and puts a restriction on funding for sheriff’s departments.
County Administrator Kevin Catlin says the cut proposed would be detrimental.
He says the Senate proposal would increase revenue sharing by $29 million and provide $60-million more statewide for sheriff’s departments.
Catlin says the Michigan Association of Counties is urging all of its members to approve similar resolutions.
Board chair Jen Strebs is also asking everyone to contact their lawmakers.
Commissioners will be formally asked by Catlin to set the budget public hearing for their next meeting on October 7th.
It will be a tentative budget until the state resolves its budget, and they know how much money they have to work with.
