LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer is pressuring state lawmakers to find common ground on the Fiscal Year 2026 budget.
The state is two weeks away from a state government shutdown if the budget is not approved.
The Democratically-controlled state Senate passed its plan this spring, but that was well before federal spending cuts were approved, and the Republican-controlled House passed theirs three weeks ago with $5-billion in cuts.
Michigan State Police would get a $50-million cut under the House budget, and county revenue sharing would also take a big hit.
Whitmer says while she would not sign the House budget, it is more up-to-date with what the state has to work with.
Republican Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall of Richland is defending the cuts his chamber made to the budget, saying that some these departments have grown over 100% in a short amount of time.
As for negotiations, he says having Governor Whitmer back in the country is helping with progress, and the House and Senate are currently engaged in daily, and long, negations.
