KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A party is set for today at Kalamazoo’s sewage plant.
The staff at the Kalamazoo Water Reclamation Plant will be celebrating its 70th anniversary today at the facility on the city’s northwest side. City Manager Jim Ritsema says everyone is invited.
There is plenty to celebrate.
Before the plant began operations in 1955, the wastes from homes, businesses and industry were pumped untreated directly into the Kalamazoo River.
The plant is unique because it uses a powdered activated carbon process that helps it treat the complex industrial wastes from the community’s Pharmaceutical plants.
It has also made strides in recent years to reduce the odors it produces.
The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with ceremonies at 1 p.m.
