LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer says state government will remain open despite lawmakers not yet approving a budget for Fiscal Year 2026, which began at midnight.
House Appropriations Committee chairwoman Ann Bollin of Brighton Township says they “have a very good framework” on the budget and “everybody is committed to it.”
The majority Republicans in the House and majority Democrats in the Senate worked out an agreement on the budget with Whitmer administration officials late last week.
The Michigan House and Senate have both approved a one-week continuation budget as negotiations on the final passage of the next fiscal year’s budget continue, and Whitmer signed that bill early Wednesday morning.
The bill extends the current budget until October 8, keeping state government from shutting down.
Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks says she wishes they didn’t have to take that action, but added it’s important to note the state’s divided government reached an agreement on the tentative budget and it will pass this week.
The budget included long-term road repair funding, and a 24% tax on cannabis that will be put to roads.
