KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Research at Kalamazoo College on a molecule that protects against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Glaucoma is being impacted by the federal government shutdown.
Associate Professor Dwight Williams has worked on the research since 2008 and says a $385,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health is on hold until the government reopens.
He says he and his students will purchase what they can and will be paid back later, noting they are being “more cautious, perhaps, maybe, than we need to.”
Williams also is not hiring more students for the research until the grant funding returns.
