PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A house fire in the 6600 block of Cypress in Portage Tuesday morning did an estimated $180,000 of damage.
Portage Public Safety got the fire under control within 15 minutes, but there was significant fire and smoke damage to the second floor and water damage to the first floor.
The 911 caller said a mattress was on fire in a bedroom around 2:30 a.m. and all three occupants, and their dog, safely evacuated before firefighters arrived.
One person was sent to a local hospital to be treated for burns, another was treated at the scene, and the third resident and the dog were not hurt.
Investigators say the preliminary cause of the fire is the improper use of a candle in the bedroom.
