TEXAS TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo may still have an ice shortage problem, but not as big as feared a few weeks ago.
The closure of Wings Event Center in 2028 and the failure of the refrigerating equipment at Wings West left the community looking at the loss of four of their six ice rinks.
Discover Kalamazoo’s Jane Ghosh says good news received yesterday lightened some of that load.
“A company called Black Bear Sports (Group) is purchasing Wings West with the intent to reopen it.”
She says they have gotten all the interested parties together twice to discuss the problem and have decided to go ahead with a feasibility study.
“Because we foresee a world in 2028 where we might be going from six sheets of ice to potentially as few as 4 here in Kalamazoo County, which is better than two!”
They want to look at alternatives to improve on that number if they can.
Portage city councilmember Nichole Miller also announced the good news at last night’s city meeting.
Hockey players of all ages, Kalamazoo’s national champion Western Michigan Broncos, the professional Kalamazoo Wings, regional and national athletic tournaments, and shows all rely on those rinks for events and practice time.
