NEWTON TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – 68 dogs have been surrendered to the Calhoun County Animal Shelter by a 68-year-old Newton Township woman.
The county sheriff’s office responded to her home in the 800 block of 8½ Mile Road after getting a report about possible animal neglect just before 11:30 Tuesday morning.
Deputies found hazardous and unsafe living conditions inside the home along with “significant amounts of animal waste and a strong odor of urine.”
They also found one dead dog in the backyard and several dogs and cats in poor health inside.
Charges of felony animal abuse and animal torture are being pursued by deputies pending the review by the Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office.
Adult Protective Services was contacted to assist with ensuring the wellbeing of the homeowner.
