ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michael Kilbourn of Otsego will spend between the next 57 months to 10 years in prison for his role starting a fire that destroyed a play structure at Otsego’s Northside Park playground last month.
The 37-year-old pled guilty October 13th to third-degree arson and the judge agreed to drop the other charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and habitual offender fourth offense.
The Allegan County Prosecutor’s Office says on September 2nd, which was the day of the fire, Kilbourn missed a sentencing hearing for a separate case of breaking and entering a building with intent.
On Monday, he was sentenced for breaking and entering a building with intent, malicious destruction of property, stolen property, and third-degree arson.
The wooded play structure was destroyed by the fire, but firefighters prevented it from spreading anywhere else.
A week after the fire, Kilbourn turned himself in to the Allegan County Jail on other outstanding warrants.
His 13-year-old nephew is also charged with third-degree arson as a juvenile, and his name will not be released.
The nephew told investigators he did what he was told because he was afraid of his uncle, according to documents.
