DEARBORN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A group of five young people aged 16-20 years old were arrested today in Michigan for allegedly plotting a violent attack this weekend.
Authorities tell CBS News the suspects were inspired by the former member of the Michigan Army National Guard, Ammar Abdulmajid-Mohamed Said, who was just 19-years-old when he was arrested in May.
The Department of Justice says Said was plotting to conduct an ISIS-inspired mass-shooting at a U.S. military base in Warren, Michigan. One or more of the members of this group of five young people may have known Said, law enforcement sources said.
Authorities say the plot however was not well formed, and the FBI was monitoring the online discussion about the plot for a period of time. There was no concrete plan for an attack.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released a statement on social media.
“This morning, I was briefed by Director Patel on the thwarted potential terrorist attack in our state,” Whitmer said. “As details continue to develop, I am grateful for the swift action of the FBI and MSP protecting Michiganders.”
