KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – An off-duty member of Oshtemo Township Fire Department was killed early Wednesday morning in a motorcycle crash in Kalamazoo.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says at 12:09 a.m. crews were dispatched to the 2400 block of Parkview Avenue for a report of a small fire. While responding, the call was updated to a motorcycle crash, with the motorcycle fully engulfed in flames.
When first responders arrived, they found the motorcycle on fire and the rider Charlie Sullivan unresponsive. Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze while officers and medical personnel began life-saving efforts. Despite their efforts, Sullivan was pronounced deceased at the scene at approximately 12:36 a.m.
In a statement Wednesday afternoon, Oshtemo Township Fire Department Fire Chief Gregory A. McComb said, “Charlie was a valued member of our fire department family and a dedicated public servant who served the residents of Oshtemo Township with pride and compassion. His commitment to helping others, both in and out of uniform, exemplified the very best of what it means to be a firefighter.”

“Our hearts are with Charlie’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters during this incredibly difficult time. We have been in contact with his family and are offering every possible support as we begin to grieve this loss together.”
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
