PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Last night’s Portage city council meeting turned into a tribute and something of a roast for councilman Terry Urban, who did not win reelection on Tuesday, ending a string of 7 terms and 28 years on the council.
He served on city advisory boards for 17 years before that.
Urban is known for his detailed evaluation of staff proposals and finding flaws that no one else saw, springing them on staff during council meetings.
Councilmember Chris Burns revealed he was 10 years old when Terry was first elected.
For his part, Urban says he probably isn’t done with them just yet.
Mayor Patricia Randall, who also won reelection says they will formally honor Urban at the swearing-in ceremony for the new council members.
It was noted that for the first time, the Portage council will have a female majority, with Kathleen Olmstead replacing Urban, and Burns believes incumbent Vic Ledbetter got more votes than any council member has ever received in a city election with 6,766.
Urban left open the question of whether he might run again.
