KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Tuesday is Veterans Day, and this year there will be one new event and a new venue for the annual celebration in Kalamazoo.
This afternoon, Kalamazoo County Administrator Kevin Catlin says a veteran’s memorial will be unveiled in the Jury Room at the new Judge Charles A. Pratt Justice Center, on Kalamazoo Avenue.
It will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. and the public is invited.
This year’s annual community commemoration will be held indoors at a different location, the Army National Guard Armory at 5353 Parkview Avenue.
It had been held annually at the Rotary Memorial downtown, but the weather hasn’t always been kind.
This year Michael Wilson, Executive Director of the VFW National Home, will be the guest speaker, and they will honor Kellie Cody, the Kalamazoo County Veteran of the Year. The event begins at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Catlin reports that thanks to the Kalamazoo County Veterans Millage, they were able to serve more veterans this year.
Veterans Day was originally established as Armistice Day to mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 when World War One ended and has evolved into a celebration of all veterans.
