KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Nine elected officials in Comstock and Oshtemo townships are facing possible recall elections.
Both townships are working through plans for battery energy storage facilities which are vehemently opposed by many residents of the communities.
The Kalamazoo County Election Committee has a meeting set for 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 4th at 201 West Kalamazoo Avenue to review nine recall petitions.
If they approve the petitions, they will set the number of valid voter signatures needed to put the recalls on an upcoming ballot.
In Comstock Township, clerk Nicole Beauchamp and trustees Kristie Cherry, Terry McIver, and Bob Pratt are recall targets.
In Oshtemo Township, supervisor Cheri Bell, clerk Dusty Farmer, and trustees Kristin Cole, Zak Ford, and Neil Sikora are targeted.
William Knight filed the recall petitions in Comstock Township on November 20 and each person is being recalled for their vote in favor of a motion by Pratt and seconded by Beauchamp “to end the moratorium on large energy projects” in the township on May 19.
Kathleen Schneider of Little Pistol Farms filed the Oshtemo Township recall petitions November 21 and has been outspoken against BESS developments.
Her farm is next to the land leased by potential developers.
Schneider felt the moratorium on the project was rushed and she was not happy with the language after a lengthy board meeting on November 10th.
