KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County will be stepping in with stop gap funding to temporarily restore housing vouchers, cut by the Trump administration that could leave some of the most vulnerable residents in the area homeless.
The notification of the cutoffs went straight to the recipients; local officials were not told of it until mid-November. This is a program that has been federally funded for four decades and has been suddenly slashed.
County board chair Jen Strebs says it impacts the community’s most vulnerable citizens.
The program is administered locally by Integrated Services of Kalamazoo and Mayor Dave Anderson, as part of his day job. It impacts about 53 families.
ISK director Jeff Patton thanked the county board for stepping in to help.
The stop-gap funding will be $66,000 in unallocated ARPA dollars.
Anderson and Strebs says everyone involved is working with local agencies and sources to find a funding solution for when this money runs out.
