KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Michigan Department of Transportation is ordering Amtrak to fix the rail crossing at Howard Street in Kalamazoo near Western Michigan University.
The crossing was raised by nine-inches by Amtrak in 2024 when the city was installing new pavement and improving the stormwater system at the crossing.
City traffic engineer Dennis Randolph says the raising of the rail crossing by more than an inch needed the approval of MDOT and Amtrak didn’t tell anyone it was raising the tracks that much.
The city pushed for a legal order to get Amtrak to address the bump and they agreed with MDOT to give the rail line more time for the design.
The road repairs and higher train crossing have led to a decrease in vehicle crashes at the intersection of Stadium Drive and Howard Street.
Amtrak says they are cooperating with the city to make the changes.
