PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The group called “Take Back the Trash” submitted 4,058 signatures to the Portage City Clerk Monday, challenging the city’s recent decision on garbage services.
A single-hauler contract with Waste Management begins March 1, 2026, after the City Council approved the the $29.4 million contract in July.
City officials now have 10 days to verify each signature’s validity. Only 1,308 signatures are needed to get the issue on the May 2026 ballot, which represents 10% of the 13,088 individuals that voted in the city’s November 2025 election.
The city received proposals from four companies, and officials interviewed Best Way Disposal, Waste Management and Republic Services, the three currently operating in Portage. Waste Management was the least expensive option at $14.04 per month for trash pick-up. Best Way’s proposal would have cost residents $17.12 a month.
Best Way has outspoken campaign at public meetings and on social media, saying residents should have a right to choose which trash hauler they contract with.
