DECATUR, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A handful of businesses and homes in the village of Decatur were evacuated and Amtrak rail service was disrupted for several hours Saturday after sensors indicated there were elevated temperatures, causing fears of a fire inside a grain silo.
Residents near Delaware Street and George Street were asked to evacuate around 2:00 p.m., with the order lifted around 5:30 p.m.
The grain silo was at a processing and storage facility owned by Cargill at 102 West Beers Street. While no fire was found, officials continued to monitor the silo overnight.
The evacuation, which included a portion of train track, caused the cancellation of Amtrak Wolverine train 352 from Chicago to Pontiac Saturday.
Buses took passengers along the route to make all the normal station stops.
Train 353, which typically goes from Pontiac to Chicago, was canceled between Kalamazoo and Chicago, with buses taking passengers on that stretch.
