KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – An elderly Kalamazoo woman is dead in a case of what the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety calls elevated domestic violence.
KDPS officers responded to an apartment complex in the 500 block of West Crosstown Tuesday after family members discovered 71-year-old Virginia Cramer deceased inside her apartment with apparent injuries.
Personnel from the Kalamazoo Forensic Crime Lab and the Criminal Investigations Division responded and determined the death to be a homicide.
KDPS says 62-year-old Jose Louies Mata was quickly identified as a person of interest. Later that evening, Mata was located and taken into custody at an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Newstead Avenue in the City of Wyoming.
Mata was formally charged with Open Murder and arraigned Thursday. Bond was denied.
“The loss of Ms. Cramer is devastating and serves as another reminder of how quickly domestic violence can escalate,” said Captain Danielle Guilds of the Criminal Investigations Division. “We urge anyone experiencing abuse to seek help before it’s too late. We are thankful for the quick apprehension of Mata so he can be held accountable for his actions.”
