KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Contrary to what you may have heard on some news reports, work on Kalamazoo’s new west side youth sports facility is proceeding on schedule, despite losing a request for a variance from the city of Kalamazoo’s Zoning Board of Appeals.
The youth sports center board was seeking five variances for building height, cutting into protected slopes, impervious covering, and bike rack requirements. Those all passed.
A variance they requested to cut down more trees than is normally permitted was denied.
The board’s Jane Ghosh says it’s a problem, but work continues.
“There’s not necessarily a delay in the project, it just means we have to work around that variance. We have options we’re actively discussing options, we remain fully committed to the project and we don’t anticipate that this will cause a significant delay.”
The tentative plan is still to open the facility sometime next year.
