KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Tenants rights advocates now are asking the Kalamazoo city commission to enact an ordinance that would protect tenants from landlords seeking retaliation after an unsuccessful attempt to force a vote.
Tristen Jessup with the We the People Action Fund says they fell short on a petition drive, and now they are appealing to commissioners to just go ahead and enact the new ordinance language.
One amendment would protect renters who organize a tenant union from landlord retaliation, and the other would require just cause for a tenant to be evicted.
Other tenants spoke up for the measure.
The city already has an ordinance protecting tenants from retaliation for a number of reasons, but organizing is not one of them.
No commissioners commented on the request at this week’s meeting, but the group says they have the support of Vice Mayor Drew Duncan to bring it forward.
