KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Groundbreaking will be Friday on a new facility for the Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education, a division within the Michigan Geological Survey at Western Michigan University.
It will be relocating to WMU’s Parkview Campus and will house the largest collection of geological samples and data in the state. It will also include dedicated research space for researchers and their students, which the repository’s current rented facility does not provide.
The $8 million project is supported by a combined $6 million in state funding, including $3 million that was secured by state Sen. Sean McCann through the Higher Education and University budget and $3 million secured by former state Rep. Rachel Hood through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy budget.
A groundbreaking celebration will take place Friday, March 20, at 11:30 a.m. at the property, located northeast of WMU’s Floyd Hall at 4601 Campus Drive in Kalamazoo.
An open house will follow from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education, located at 5272 W. Michigan Ave. in Kalamazoo.
