COLON, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A five-year-old boy has died after being found unconscious in a stream in St. Joseph County.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to the 400 block of North Swan Street in Colon early Tuesday morning, following reports of a missing child. After a search of the surrounding area, the boy was discovered unresponsive in a stream located between Palmer Lake and Sturgeon Lake.
First responders performed lifesaving measures at the scene before the child was transported to Three Rivers Hospital. Despite these efforts, he was later pronounced dead.
Numerous agencies, including St. Joseph County Dive Rescue, St. Joseph County Victim Services, Michigan State Police, Branch County Sheriff’s Office, Colon Police Department, Coldwater Police Department, White Pigeon Police Department, Colon Township Fire and Rescue, Lifecare Ambulance Services, the Western Michigan University Office of the Medical Examiner, Sturgis Hospital, and Beacon Health assisted in the response.
The incident remains under active investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, and the child’s identity has not yet been publicly released.
