PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Portage Public Schools will host a groundbreaking ceremony June 3 for the new Amberly Elementary School
The new facility is part of the $132.4 million “Finishing the Job” bond, approved by voters in 2025 to continue plans to modernize and rebuild Portage’s aging elementary schools.
School officials say families, students, and community members had the opportunity last week to attend a Community Gallery Walk on to preview design plans and learn more about how construction will unfold. The new building will be built on the Amberly Elementary property while the current school remains in operation, preventing the need for students and teachers to move to a different building during the two-year construction process.
Originally opened in 1960, Amberly Elementary has served the Portage community for some 66 years. The new building is expected to open in fall 2028.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place Wednesday, June 3 at 2:00 pm at Amberly Elementary School, 6637 Amberly Street, Portage.
