KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Kalamazoo’s Environmental Concerns Committee wants the city commission to authorize a report on a junkyard fire earlier this month that released potentially hazardous pollutants into the air and water.
The huge fire in a pile of metal waste took around a million gallons of water and hours to extinguish at Kalamazoo Metal Recyclers at on 1525 Lake Street two weeks ago today.
Air monitors recorded elevated levels of particulate matter in the air during the blaze.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy was notified about possible pollutants draining into the Kalamazoo River.
The committee wants to know what chemicals were in the airborne particulate matter and the water runoff, how that information will be reported to the public, particularly impacted residents and what further monitoring is planned.
Commissioners will receive the request this evening.
