KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County board has been discussing the sorry state of child care locally for a few months, pushed by advocacy groups to do something to improve access in Kalamazoo.
This week, they will get their first look at a millage request, asking homeowners if they are willing to foot the bill.
Jermaine Robinson with Pre-care International Daycare and Lee Christiansen with Little Hands Montessori told commissioners that preschoolers need adequate daycare, and aren’t getting it.
The resolution on the agenda for first reading would put a request for half a mil on the August 5th primary ballot.
If approved, the millage would not come up for renewal for a decade.
The board will have a couple of weeks to get input and mull over the idea before voting on the request during their first meeting in May.
A half mill would increase tax bills about $50 for every $100,000 in taxable evaluation.
