KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County officials are denying media reports that inmates at the Kalamazoo County Jail aren’t getting enough clean water.
County Administrator Kevin Catlin reported to the county board last night that they have been providing inmates with as much bottled water as they request, since tests revealed elevated copper levels last month.
He says they have to do it carefully, having inmates exchange empty bottles for full ones, as a security precaution.
He says they are taking steps to rebuild the plumbing, but its impossible to say how long that might take.
In the meantime, the inmates can get all the water they want as long as they are willing to be patient with staff.
The water is safe for showering, flushing and a safe supply is available in the kitchen.
Catlin says a number of intermediate steps have been taken until the plumbing is replaced.
Commissioners say they have been getting complaints and concerns from constituents who have family members in the facility.
It’s just the latest problem with the older part of the Kalamazoo County Jail facility which needs several major repairs to its infrastructure and systems.
