KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Volunteer-powered events to transform public spaces into welcoming, colorful landscapes in Kalamazoo and Portage are underway this spring.
Community Planting Days in downtown Kalamazoo and Portage’s City Centre are organized by the group Kalamazoo in Bloom. In collaboration with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and the Gun Lake Tribe, this year’s plantings will feature special designs that thoughtfully recognize the United States’ 250th anniversary, which the group says will blend artistic expression, cultural reflection, and community pride.
“Kalamazoo in Bloom is about more than flowers—it’s about people coming together to care for the places we share,” said Executive Director Monika Trahe. “These planting days are a chance to celebrate our community’s beauty, creativity, and history in a hands-on way.”
Volunteers of all experience levels are welcome and all supplies, including tools and gloves, will be provided for those who need them
The group says volunteer participation is especially needed in downtown Kalamazoo Wednesday, May 20 and Friday, May 22.
Advance registration is encouraged but not required. For details on dates, locations, activities, and to sign up, visit their website at https://www.kalamazooinbloom.org/planting-days.
