WAYLAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 21, 2026) – An apparently drowsy driver caused a two-vehicle crash involving an ambulance near Wayland on Wednesday evening.
According to Allegan County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ryan Rewa, the ambulance was northbound on US-131 shortly before 7 PM, transporting a patient to an undisclosed Grand Rapids area hospital, when it was slammed from behind by a pick up truck near the 63 mile marker, south of the 135th Avenue exit. The force of the collision caused the ambulance to veer into a ditch, which led to it flipping over onto its roof.
The patient being transported was subsequently flown by Aero Med to Corewell-Butterworth Hospital in serious condition, while the two ambulance staffers also were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. There was no word as to whether the pickup driver, who admitted to deputies afterward that he had dozed off behind the wheel, was hurt.
It took over three hours to clear up the scene, as traffic was diverted off of the highway. No names or hometowns were disclosed as the incident remains under investigation.
