KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – 25-year-old Kenyun Smith of Kalamazoo has been convicted by a jury of assault with intent to murder for a March 2025 shooting that badly injured a Kalamazoo Township police officer.
Smith’s girlfriend called 9-1-1 on March 27th last year and told dispatchers Smith had pulled a gun on her at her home on Kendall Avenue.
He ran almost three miles to the Kalamazoo Public Schools Administration building on Howard Street, where he got into a shootout with police.
Officer Evan Finch was shot in one of his legs and is still recovering.
Smith faces up to life in prison when he’s sentenced September 18th.
